How much should an Airbnb cleaning fee be?

There is no correct number, and anyone quoting one has invented it. A cleaning fee is a cost recovery, so it starts at what the changeover costs you: the cleaner's invoice, laundry, consumables, and your own time if you do it yourself. From there you have three honest choices, and each one moves money between the fee and the nightly rate rather than creating any.

Charge the changeover, nothing more
The simplest defensible position: the fee returns a real cost and the nightly rate carries the profit. Nobody can argue with a fee that matches an invoice.

Fold part of it into the rate
A lower fee makes short stays look cheaper, because the fee is spread over fewer nights. The cost does not disappear — it moves into the rate, so raise the rate by the shortfall divided by your average stay length.

Raise the minimum stay instead
A high fee and a one-night minimum fight each other. If the fee has to stay high, a two-night minimum stops guests meeting it at its worst ratio.

Three things the fee changes that the fee is not about

Guests compare totals, not rates
Both Booking.com and Airbnb show a total for the dates searched, so a listing with a low rate and a heavy fee lands next to one with a higher rate and no fee at all. The number that decides is the total for the stay.
Short stays are where the fee bites
The same fee is spread over one night or over seven. On a single night it can be the largest line on the bill, which is why one-night bookings dry up first when a fee goes up.
The cost side is yours to measure
Cleaner, laundry, restock, your own drive time. Put the real figure in, not the one you would like it to be — everything below it is arithmetic.
